Climate Education Teaching Portal from NOAA

NOAA has recently launched a new Teaching Climate education portal, This portal leverages tens of millions of dollars in NOAA, NASA, and NSF federal education grant projects by providing more than 514 of the best climate education resources that have been produced over the past decade. NOAA supports the implementation of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) through an integrated Earth system science approach in K-12 education. The CLEAN framework for vetting, reviewing, and assuring scientific quality of climate and global change education materials on climate, energy and related topics will be useful to teachers and educational systems across the nation.

Workshop Description: Please join Prairie Rivers Network at the Peoria Library main branch for a rain garden workshop. Rain gardens are a beautiful landscape feature that helps remove pollution from stormwater, reduces flooding, and provides habitat for wildlife such as hummingbirds and butterflies. Friends of Rocky Glen Hosting Fundraiser at Forest Park Nature Center

Sunday, October 14th 1:00-3:00 PM

Location:  Forest Park Nature Center. 5809 Forest Park Drive, Peoria Heights.

What? A Friends of Rocky Glen membership drive and fundraiser featuring presentations on Rocky Glen and hikes into the canyon. Bill Knight will discuss Horseshoe Bottoms, the acclaimed 1935 story of life on the Kickapoo Creek coal mines. Ed Stermer will outline the unique convergence of geologic forces that shaped Rocky Glen. Presentations start at 1:00 and repeat at 2:00 PM. Hikes leave for the glen at 1:45 and 2:45 PM.

Weatherizing Your Home & Energy Saving Tips Class

Learn pertinent information about ways to save energy and money at home.  The first half will focus on techniques participants can employ immediately to reduce energy use within the home, with a focus on the “biggest bang for the buck” options.  The second half will cover more advanced and technical home improvements such as air sealing and insulation.  We’ll explain how and why these improvements work for you to save energy and money as well as improving home safety and comfort.  The workshop will highlight locally available resources to support these energy saving activities including utility rebate programs.
