Get paid $50 to recycle your refrigerator!

If you have a second refrigerator running in your home, it could be costing you a $100 a year in energy costs and doing its part to contribute to global warming.  One of the core solutions in combating climate change is to take steps to make homes energy efficient.  By removing unnecessary appliances, it serves the duel purpose of reducing energy bills and helping the planet.

Through Ameren’s Refrigerator & Freezer Recycling Program, they will pick up the unit, recycle it, and pay you $50 as well!  Look for a bill insert from Ameren Illinois or simply visit the ActOnEnergy program web site.  If you have a refrigerator in the home that you would like to properly dispose of, all you have to do is call them up at 866-899-9088 and schedule a pickup.  Around 4 to 6 weeks after the pickup, you are sent a rebate check in the mail from Ameren.  Since it is a personal check, you may use the money as you like!

Qualifications to participate

Once you call the number, a representative will give you more specific details to ensure the transaction goes smoothly.

  • The unit must be in good working condition.  You will be asked to turn it on the night before the scheduled pickup so that the driver can verify the unit is working.
  • There is no longer an age requirement for the unit according to the 2011 enhancements to Act On Energy programs.
  • Basic household refrigerators or freezers are accepted, but industrial units and “dorm” units are not.

Who picks the units up?  Where to the units go after they are picked up?

Ameren has contracted with a company from Southern California called ARCA.  The are taken to a recycle in Springfield where 99% of the parts are recovered.

Wow what a difference of service. The employees that came and got my refrigerator were excellent. I was having second thoughts of this program due to the inconsistency of your call center. The helpfulness of the staff of the labor was great. Night and day.
